Awesome Jazz on a Dime
I only pop in sporadically these days, but Smalls is still the place to hear some of the best acts playing today. Just around the block from the famed Village Vanguard, Smalls provides the type of intimate environment enthusiasts die for. Back in the day, I'd bring my West Coast friends in for a real treat. They'd get their minds blown, cool out to sweet sounds, all while nesting in mixed matched chairs and lopsided sofas. A true BYOB environment, you could feel the mystery liquids squish beneath your shoes as the heavy clouds of smoke parsed out dollops of miner's lung like a true equal opportunity employer. Speaking of employers, Mitch cleaned the place up after the brief closure, now with a shiny new bar (albeit the bartender's a bit wooden) and an environment you'd even consider taking your friends with jobs. I say, check it out some time when you're in town. And if you're local, this is just a friendly reminder. After all, the cover's only $10! Tell Mitch Fulano sentcha! (And pet his white dog for me.)
