Freecycle is nationwide
freecycle.org/ has yahoo-group connections by town all over the place. I first heard of them from LJ buddies; we given away huge to small things; moved last year with boxes from a few different folks and gave away our boxes in turn as we unpacked. I love that there's no judgment calls on whatever anyone asks for, or has to offer.
I haven't heard of a swap-meet of this type locally; sounds like a good idea. - Ruth , posted 02/28/06

Free Cycle
Free Cycle is great! Last year we went to a sort of flea market/give-away that Free Cycle hosted at a space in the East Village. You would bring stuff you don't want anymore, place it on the tables (giving it away for free) and see if there were any items you wanted (also for free). - Diane , posted 01/04/06
