spirituality/politics dichotomy
Hi everyone. There is a particular reason why I’m posting links to these 2 excellent political documentaries mostly on psychology and spirituality-leaning tribes. The reason is the so called hippie/activist dichotomy. It seems to me that historically and until present the counterculture in western societies most of the time divides politics and spirituality into two separate social groups that often consciously strive to be unrelated to each other and are usually not mutually supportive. Perhaps one of the cultural-historical roots of this lays in the age of enlightenment and the secular-positivist movement against the totalitarianism of the medieval church several hundreds of years ago, the church/state divide, which is culturally and historically essential for western democracies. But that’s a whole other complicated can of worms. My argument is that just as political activism is futile without transformation of consciousness, so is transformation of consciousness futile without outward political awareness and action.

Elaborating on this argument, it seems to me that the majority of political activists seem to be limited to focusing on transforming the external macro-system, the collective as a whole without focusing on the self-actualization of the individual, whereas the majority of the new-agers seem to be limited to focusing on self-centered self-actualization without taking such a transformation into the larger socio-political arena. One without the other is like mind without the body, and by the way the mind-body dichotomy is much disputed in contemporary philosophy as well.

Basically what I’m talking about here is an ideology of holistic politics, where the first fundamental step to a socio-political transformation is the transformation of consciousness, liberation of mind from the dominant culture and systems of mind-control, and the 2nd fundamental step is informed and active resistance against the dominant system of coercion and repression with this new consciousness at its core. This way, a political change isn’t going to collapse back into the same socio-cultural landscape which preceded this change.

Anyway, without further trying too hard to sound dorky, here are the documentaries.
